Formal writing 3: Final project

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 Your final project for this class is an opportunity to connect our readings with your own emerging interests. You will formulate a research question in your preliminary proposal and then develop an annotated bibliography to pursue your inquiry, before presenting your answers to the class at the end of the semester and writing up a formal paper.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 Your project may take the form of a research paper or cultural analysis but may also be a piece of writing centered less in argument and more in exploratory engagement or literature review. I encourage you to formulate a project that will help you to move toward your larger goals in graduate study. Each student will meet individually with me to discuss their plans at least once.

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 0 Preliminary proposal meeting: Schedule a meeting here.
Bring a one-page rough description of your project idea for us to discuss. The description should include a question that you would like your research to explore.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 0 Formal proposal due: Monday November 14.
Write this as if it were a conference paper or funding proposal. Approximately 500 words, with an indicative bibliography of at least five citations (which may or may not be from class).

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 0 Annotated bibliography and progress notes due: Wednesday November 23
Select five sources (none from class), read them, and write a paragraph of description about each one. What was useful? What wasn’t? How might this source help you develop your project? Include 1-2 pages of informal analysis, thinking through how the research described here is informing your developing project.

7 Leave a comment on paragraph 7 0 Final project presentations: Wednesday December 7
Each student will have five minutes to share a “lightning talk” version of their project with a short time for discussion afterwards. Presentations may take any format you prefer.

8 Leave a comment on paragraph 8 0 Final submission on ELMS: Friday December 16
Your final paper should be around 3,000 words long.
